Case Study 1 - Signal Films

Established in 2008, Signal Films specialises in creative and digital media training and producing films and documentaries for cinema and broadcast. Based in Barrow-in-Furness we provide free, high-quality practical media skills training, participatory creative opportunities and access to state-of-the-art digital video, photography and multimedia facilities to residents of Cumbria.

Through their previous work at Shoreline Films the company's dedicated team, led by directors Kerry Kolbe and Loren Slater, has a strong track record of delivering industry training for the UK Film Council and the Learning Skills Council, running creative networking events and screenings across the Lake District and providing placements for local people on productions such as Channel 4's Shameless and Miss Potter. Our creative work is regularly shown on national and international platforms - our most recent short film 'Dead Dog' was chosen for this year's UK Film Council Completion Fund and was one of only seven to be selected for Competition at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2008.

Signal Films plays an active role in encouraging the development of the creative sector, delivering a series of initiatives to encourage entrepreneurship and specialist skills development in partnership with Furness Enterprise and West Lakes Renaissance.

Currently we are working with designer Wayne Hemingway, Manchester-based creative agency four23 and Barrow Borough Council to develop a £1.5m creative media centre in a five-storey Victorian building in Barrow town centre.
