Case Study 2 - Furness Community Media
Furness Community Media is a social enterprise, which commenced trading in April 2007. Managed by Furness Newspapers, Furness Community Media is a company limited by guarantee, with a remit to publish a series of community newspapers under the banner of the Community Press.
There are five titles, covering the electoral wards of Barrow Island, North and South Walney, Ormsgill, Hindpool, Central and Risedale, and each gives the local communities within the wards an opportunity to raise issues of concern, or highlight future events. Most of the content of the newspapers is written and produced by local volunteers.
Formerly funded by the Furness Partnership, (the local strategic partnership), Furness Newspapers saw an opportunity to continue publication by forming a social enterprise. By working with The Box, they were able to successfully apply for funding, which ensured continuation of the newspapers.
Volunteers help with the production of the newspapers, and get useful on-the-job experience of the media and this has led some of them to go into jobs or training full time.
